Happy Independence Day!
If you’re in the U.S., I hope you’re having a terrific day with you and yours. Here’s a little something to crochet while you’re waiting for the fireworks to start.
You can pin this little American flag motif to your clothing, stick it on a wreath, attach it to a necklace and wear it like a pendant. Or, you can make two and sew them together to form a little coin purse or hand warmer.
If you’ve ever worked with stripes before, you know that changing color every row — with an even number of colors as opposed to an odd number — means that you have to FO at the end of each row, leaving a ton of ends to weave in. It’s the goal of my life to avoid weaving in ends, so I decided to simply carry the unused strand through the stitches (hiding it) instead of fastening it off. Consequently, this pattern involves a ton of color changes, so make sure you watch my video on color changing. I explain how to hide the unused strand inside your stitches.
American Flag Motif
- Worsted weight yarn in red, white and blue
- G hook
- Yarn needle
I’m very lazy when it comes to gauge, but my final product measured approx. 4 inches by 3 inches (10 cm by 8 cm).
Row 1 (RS): With red, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (15 sc). On last sc, change color to white.
Row 2: With white, sc in each sc across (15 sc). Make sure you carry the red strand through your stitches, hiding the strand inside your sc. Watch my video on how to do this. On last sc, change color to red.
Row 3: With red, sc in each sc across (15 sc), carrying white strand through. On last sc, change color to white.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3.
Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: Repeat Row 3, except change color to blue on last sc.
Row 8: With blue, sc in first 7 sc. Change color to white and sc in rem sts across, carrying red strand through (do not carry through blue strand). Change color to red on last sc.
Row 9: With red, sc in first 8 sc, carrying white strand through. Change color to blue and sc in rem sts across. Do not carry red or white strands through. Ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Repeat Row 8.
Row 11: Repeat Row 9.
Row 12: Repeat Row 8.
Row 13 (Geeky moment: 13 rows for the 13 original colonies!): Repeat Row 9, except there’s no need to carry the white strand through the red sc at this point. You can simply drop it.
FO all three colors and weave in ends — there should only be six! With white, embroider a star in the center of the blue rectangle.
