ColLINKtion: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

“There is something about very cold weather that gives one an enormous appetite,” says Roald Dahl in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Where I live in San Diego, the sun is shining — and it’s downright tropical where I’m at right now on vacation — but my friends and family on the opposite side of the country are wrapping scarves around their necks and shoving their feet into fur-lined boots. And eating!

Simmering soups, thick stews, bubbling casseroles, steaming hot chocolate, and fresh baked pie. Sugar gets the blood pumping, and it does warm you up. Mr. Wonka knew what he was talking about, and so did Grandpa Joe when he said, “I’ve heard tell that what you imagine sometimes comes true.”

If there is one thing that’s more prevalent in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” than chocolate, it’s imagination. That’s why the story has inspired two half-psychotic films and a strong cult following.

Chipotle’s touching ad, “The Scarecrow,” featuring Fiona Apple singing “Pure Imagination” is testament to the enduring popularity and consumer recognition the Wilder film still commands.

Since candy and sweets and imagination are running wild this time of year, I chose “Charlie” as this week’s ColLINKtion theme. Here are crochet patterns that comprise my Wonka palate.
