Free Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch Crochet Pattern

Witch

“HEEEE hee hee hee hee! I’ll get you my pretty!” If any of the characters from The Wizard of Oz has achieved near rock star status, it’s the Wicked Witch of the West. Even though she’s thoroughly wicked in Baum’s original portrayal — she even wears an eye patch for heaven’s sake (which I didn’t have the heart to include in this pattern and opted for black-and-green striped tights instead) — she’s glorified as a misunderstood magical genius in Gregory McGuire’s masterful reimagining, Wicked. The musical takes McGuire’s heavy themes and makes them palatable for the musically inclined. I actually adore the stage version — cummon, who doesn’t?

Enjoy this free crochet pattern! It’s meant to go along with the other free amigurumi patterns in my Wizard of Oz collection.

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4-ply) yarn (any type) in black and puke green
  • G hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Black doll eyes (small)
  • Polyester stuffing

Project Notes

All rounds are worked in spiral (without joining) unless otherwise indicated, as with the Witch’s legs. Stuff each part firmly as you go. Gauge is not important with amigurumi. The larger the hook and thicker the yarn, the larger the doll, and vice versa. Stuff each part firmly as you go. Check out my abbreviations page if you need help reading this pattern.

Hair
NOTE: I recommend adding hair last.
Cut a handful of 6-inch strands of black yarn, and attach each strand loop-style to rnds 4 and 5 of the witch’s head: Fold each strand in half. Insert hook through the st that you want to attach the hair to. Place the folded end of the strand on the hook and pull partially through the st, creating a loop. Pull two loose ends of strand through the loop created and pull tight. Check out EssHaych’s great tutorial on how to do this.

There is no need to cover the entire top of the head with hair, as the hat is sewn to the top of the head.

To join legs: Make one leg through rnd 7, and fasten off. Make other leg, and begin an 8th rnd (should be black). Continue working as follows to join the legs: Sc in each sc on leg and then sc in each sc on other leg (it doesn’t matter which sc you start with.) Finish off, leave long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

  1. Sew arms to sides of body.
  2. Sew feet below skirt. Lift skirt Marilyn Monroe-style, and sew legs near waist. This encloses the doll so that it is “complete”
  3. Sew head to body and add hair (follow directions above)
  4. Stuff hat lightly and sew to top center of head.
  5. With black yarn, embroider mouth and eyebrows on face.

  1. Hi just a quick question: is this British or American? The difference being that what Americans call single crochet is actually british double crochet. I just want to know what I should actually be doing!!
